Heat Pumps: The Future of Home Heating

What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump extracts renewable heat from the air (air source) or ground (ground source) to heat your home and hot water. They're up to 3x more efficient than gas boilers.

Types

  • Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP): Most common, easier to install, costs £8,000 – £12,000
  • Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP): More efficient but requires ground works, costs £15,000 – £35,000

Government Support

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants of up to £7,500 for heat pumps, making them much more affordable.

Is Your Home Suitable?

  • Well-insulated homes work best
  • Space for an outdoor unit (ASHP) or ground loops (GSHP)
  • Larger radiators or underfloor heating recommended
  • Works with existing hot water cylinders

Running Costs

Despite electricity being more expensive than gas per unit, heat pumps are so efficient they typically cost less to run — especially when combined with solar panels.
