Insulation: The Foundation of an Energy Efficient Home

Why Insulation Comes First

We always recommend insulation as the first step in any home energy improvement plan. There's no point generating energy if it's escaping through your walls and roof.

Types of Insulation

  • Loft Insulation: Saves up to £590/year, costs £300 – £800
  • Cavity Wall: Saves up to £795/year, costs £1,500 – £2,500
  • Solid Wall (Internal): Saves up to £580/year, costs £5,000 – £14,000
  • Solid Wall (External): Saves up to £580/year, costs £8,000 – £22,000
  • Floor Insulation: Saves up to £110/year, costs £500 – £1,200

Quick Check

  1. Can you see your loft joists? You need more loft insulation
  2. Was your home built after 1920? Likely has cavity walls that can be filled
  3. Are your walls cold to touch? You may need solid wall insulation

Government Grants

Many homeowners are eligible for free or subsidised insulation through ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme.
